Team USA vs Team Europe

The CrossFit Invitational: Team USA vs Team Europe

 

With the 2012 CrossFit Games done and the champions crowned, elite CrossFit athletes from the United States and Europe will compete with each other in an  event called the Team USA vs. Team Europe Invitational being held in London tomorrow, October 13, 2012.

Team USA’s roster consists of Matt Chan, Kristan Clever, Rebecca Voigt, Jason Khalipa, and Julie Foucher. These athletes have been seen training strength and skill elements alongside other top CrossFit athletes including Canada’s top female CrossFitter Camille Leblanc-Bazinet and competitors from San Diego’s CrossFit SoCal and CrossFit Invictus, including CrossFit Games competitor Jenny LaBaw. Missing from recent training sessions is two-time CrossFit Games champion Rich Froning, who will be, however,  joining the team for the event in London.

Team USA will take on Team Europe’s roster of two-time CrossFit Games champion Annie Thorisdottir, Katrin Tanja Davidsdottir, Samantha Briggs, Numi Snaer Katrinarson, Mikko Aronpaa, and Frederik Aegidius. On paper, based on how the competitors finished in the 2012 CrossFit Games, Team USA should be considered a huge favorite for the first-time event that will be televised on Eurosport.

According to CrossFit Director of Training Dave Castro, the four-event competition between Team USA and Team Europe will largely consist of traditional CrossFit movements.

On Thursday morning, Dave Castro and Tony Budding met with Team USA and Team Europe in London, England.

To eliminate any bias, the teams negotiated the workouts and format for the CrossFit Invitational. The teams were given only basic guidelines. There will be four stages, and the teams will try to accumulate the most points.

The conversation was lively but jovial, and most of the competition has been agreed upon. 

Stage 1 — 3 Events, 6 points

In the first stage, the teams will split into one man, one woman pairs. Four people, one pair from each team, will take on one of three two-point Events. A different pair must be used in each Event. 

Stage 2 —  3 Events, 7 points

In the second stage, the women will face two Events worth two points and one Event worth three points. 

Stage 3 — 3 Events, 7 points

In the third stage, the men will face two Events worth two points and one Event worth three points. 

Stage 4 — 1 Event, 6 points

In the Finale, everyone will take on a single six-point Event. 

That’s a total of 10 Events and 26 points. The complete workout details will be released soon.
