October Athlete of the Month
Athlete of the Month: Chris Lucas
Hometown: Richland, WA
Age: 50 years young
When did you first start training at FOCF?: March of this year
Favorite WOD: I am not sure I have a favorite as I really like the variety, to use a movie line, CrossFit is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get! I really enjoy working with the weights and I like rowing too.
Least Favorite WOD: Any WOD with running …..
Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I played sports in school, mostly football, I had not really been too active until the last year or so. We have started mountain biking this year and love it, we also did the Warrior Dash in Oregon this year, what a blast!
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? My sister in law Jenni Miles- Ecclestone started CrossFit and told Debbie and I about it, we came down for a session and have been hooked since.
Take us back to your first WOD… what was it, and how did it feel? I remember thinking that was very intense for such a short time, I was exhausted. But at the same time I felt really good about the workout and what I thought it could do for me.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Well to start with, this has been the latest chapter in my journey over the last year and a half to lose weight and get into shape. In early 2010 I was tipping the scales at 385 pounds on my way to 400 and certainly an early death. I made my mind up to change my life, so I dieted and exercised to loose over 100 pounds. It was then I wanted to exercise harder and found CrossFit, since then I have become so much stronger and my endurance is way up. As I mentioned we began mountain biking this year, one of my favorite rides is up Badger Mountain, I can now make the ride up there without stopping to catch my breath or rest my legs, I owe that conditioning to CrossFit.
Before My weight loss I was type 2 diabetic, and on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol now with the fitness regimine and the (mostly)Paleo diet I am happy to say I am no longer on any medications!
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? I am turning back the clock on aging, I turned 50 this year but now feel better than I have in 25 years. I am also doing things that a little over a year ago I would have never dreamed of doing; the workouts, riding my bike up Badger mountain, Warrior Dash, 5k runs and even considering a half marathon…
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / FOCF moments: We have made doing CrossFit a bit of a family affair with my wife Debbie, sister in law Jenni Miles-Ecclestone, niece Courtney Winston, niece Emma Miles, and nephew Mason Miles, though we can’t go together all the time due to schedules and other commitments we do go together as much as we can, I really like the fact we can do something healthy like CrossFit and do it as a family. I also like that CrossFit itself is like a family too and is unlike any other organized exercise program. Where else can you go and know the names of those in the gym with you, and are encouraged by everyone.
Any advice for people just getting started? Try it and you will be hooked!
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? My family is the most important thing to me, Debbie and I recently became grandparents to Lilyana Madeline Carrosco so we are excited about that! As I said we love to mountain bike, recently we rode the Hiawatha Trail in Montana, fantastic scenery! We also love to travel and go camping.
