Paleo vs Heart Attack Grill

Posted by mblarkin on February 25, 2010

Here are two grossly different videos of how and how not to eat. The first video was made for a high school project. Very simply put, describes what you should eat and why you shouldn’t eat other types of food. The other, well lets just say if you want to eat like this, maybe this isn’t the place for you. If you come here you are making a conscious decision to better yourself and improve your way of life.

“Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”

Humble Pie

Posted by mblarkin on February 23, 2010

I am often asked by people, “why do you like doing that!?” How is it that bar can make you feel inadequate, weak, uncoordinated and insecure? It’s only 95lbs!! But yesterdays workout, which ever level you completed it in, will humble even the most successful CrossFitter! SO…why do I come back for this beating everyday? Because this is what makes me better, and I know I can always get better. I don’t like to be told that I can’t do something, it only drives me to work harder, to do my best, to finish. I always want my intensity at my max, to see how much I can lift and how fast I can finish the WOD. If you do this, you too will eat your fair share of “Humble Pie” here at FallOut CrossFit. Why do you keep coming back?

WOD: 5 rounds: 400m run, 30 tuck jumps, 15 clapping pushups

  • Level III – Rx
  • Level II – clapping pushups from knees
  • Level I – 30 knee pushups

RIP – Hand Ripping

Posted by mblarkin on February 22, 2010

This is the second part to important hand care, a must for a CrossFitter. Last time I talked about how to care for your calluses. Thanks for the comments and extra tips, great information! This way to tape your hand as demonstrated by Andy from CrossFit LA is a great way to save yourself from skin tears which occur for most right around the 100 pull-up mark for most. This seems to be the human skins limit to the shearing forces of CrossFit. Save your hands from ripping, watch the video and bring tape to the gym for yourself.

Kick the Sugar!

Posted by mblarkin on February 19, 2010

Want to know the single best thing you can do to improve your health and feel better all at the same time. Stop eating sugar, and/or sugar substitutes! Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns writes in “Men’s Health”, Steve Nash on Living Sugar-Free, about his experience in quitting the sugar strangle hold and what it did for his performance. As you age this will make an even bigger impact. This is definitely not an easy thing to do, sugar is in everything. It takes a watchful eye to avoid it, even the smallest amount is a no-no. But I challenge you to give it a try and see the difference today! Reduce or eliminate sugar from your diet and see how much better you will feel, and how much better your times will be in the gym.
